The program aims to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial industry, fostering an entrepreneurial mindset among university staff and students.
Core Eligibility & Scope
The scheme is open to applicants of any nationality who have the legal right to work in the UK for the duration of the project.
Professional Background: Applicants must have a strong background in science or engineering and demonstrate significant experience working within an industrial research environment.
Key Competencies: Candidates must show proven experience in at least one of the following areas: managing university-business collaborations, commercializing academic research, launching or scaling spinouts/startups, or mentoring and training others.
Employment Status: Eligible applicants can be currently employed full-time, part-time, or self-employed.
Scientific Remit: The project must fall within the Royal Society’s scope of natural sciences (including life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering). Clinical medicine, social sciences, and humanities are strictly excluded.
Program Value and Financial Benefits
The award provides financial support to enable the recipient to spend one day per week (20% FTE) dedicated to their host university project.
Total Funding: A maximum award value of £50,000 over a fixed two-year duration (up to £25,000 per year).
Salary Contribution: Up to £20,000 annually goes toward covering 20% of the award holder's basic salary. The individual's primary employer continues to maintain standard national insurance and pension contributions.
Project & Travel Expenses: Up to £5,000 per year is allocated to cover commuting, accommodation (if required), hosting training workshops, attending meetings, or funding innovation events linked to the project plan.

Application and Deployment Process
Secure a Host Institution: Applicants must coordinate directly with an eligible UK host university to design a bespoke collaboration project before applying.

Peer Review Vetting: Submissions undergo a rigorous selection panel review handled by translation experts, industry leaders, and former award holders.
